The Lost Art of Asking for Honest Feedback

May 16, 2024

May 16, 2024

This week's creative tip: have a place to ask for constructive feedback.

Earlier this month, Hashtag Paid hosted a creator marketing event and they were kind enough to let me try out my whacky idea of animating stop-motion live.

I posted the animation on my free Patreon page and asked for honest feedback - good and bad. I received about two dozen really insightful, constructive comments that helped me see a few blind spots in my work.

I've been singing the praises of having a small community where I can mentor and share my process, but it was refreshing to flip things around and ask how I can improve.

It sounds obvious to seek honest feedback, but I think most social media platforms have put more emphasis on metrics like views and likes to value any creative work. The value should really be put on getting better with everything you make, and having a space to seek that growth has been fantastic.
