What's your theme?
So this week, I snapped.
From February through May, I packed up my house, moved, unpacked, and then settled into my new studio. That meant no making videos and a drought of creative output.
I couldn't take it anymore.
On Monday, I decided I was going to post something. Anything!
Magic
My instinct was to share a niche detail of my process, like a lighting or rigging detail in my new studio. I'll admit, the pressure of being offline for so long was getting to me. Would the platforms start to punish me for disappearing?
But then I remembered that I have a theme:
✨Magic✨
For the past handful of years, I've worked to make sure every piece of video content I post feels magical.
Magical edits
Objects brought to life with stop-motion
Behind-the-scenes breakdowns of how the magic works
So snapped out of the pressure to post just anything and made a fun video riffing on a recent trend where artists reveal their paintings. It only took a few hours to make, but the results are magical. And that made all the difference.
What's your theme?
From a business standpoint, knowing your theme is powerful. No-nonsense real estate educator? Cozy blankets? Handmade candies? Grotesque caricature artist?
When you're clear about the story you're telling, it's easier for people to connect with you, explore your services, or recommend your account to friends.
✨ A consistent theme builds authority and trust.
And at the very least, your theme can serve as a barometer for what not to post. In a world that pressures us to post constantly, that clarity can keep you from diluting what makes your work special.
That's why I didn't just post a studio update for the sake of 'staying active.' I posted something that still felt like me (and reinvigorated my creativity)!
