The Process is the Product

This week's creative output: sharing your process.

I just wrapped a job with YouTube, who asked if I could create a short animation to kick off Halloween on the official YouTube account (YouTube's YouTube). I landed on doing a strata-cut (animated slicing) of the internal anatomy of a ghost!

My immediate thought for jobs like this is that I'll make them something short and sweet, and then I'll document the process to create a dedicated behind-the-scenes video for myself.

As always, the behind-the-scenes clip performed much better (2x-3x views on every platform). I love approaching jobs like this because it's a win-win for both me and the client.

But! I'd highly recommend taking this approach for anything you create. Make the pretty, portfolio thing and then back it up with the filmed-on-a-phone, process thing. I go much more in-depth into this in the podcast episode below.

🎤 On the Podcast

I had the pleasure of speaking with illustrator, director, & author Scott Christian Sava on this week's episode of How Do Artists Make Money?

A highlight was hearing how Scott has built a massive audience from sharing his illustration process - and how its resulted in a book deal:
