How Artists Are Hyping Their Work

Self-promotion! Every artist's nightmare.

Recently, I've noticed a successful trend on social media of artists providing a few seconds of context into the handmade process required to produce their work. Basically, they're sharing the final-ish steps in the artistic process before revealing the completed work.

Permission to Be Lazy

I've linked the videos above to highlight how each artist is finding the simplest way to share their process. None are speaking to camera. Or even using words! They periodically turn their phone camera on and record for a few seconds.

I get it. Being an artist PLUS a social media marketer is an overwhelming amount of work. None of us signed up to be full-time content creators when we followed our artistic passions.

So forget about what you think posting on social media should be. Who cares about recording yourself or delivering written scripts. There are no rules and the examples above prove that you can find promotional success by sharing the smallest glimpse of your handmade process.

Also with apps like Instagram Edits, it's never been easier to cut together videos right on your phone.

The Anti-AI Movement

Apple (Apple!) recently shared a behind-the-scenes video highlighting the human creativity and practical effects filmmaking that went into its wildly creative MacBook Neo launch.

Silicon Valley has been desperately trying to sell us the story that AI imagery is taking over the media landscape but I don't think people are buying it.

We crave human ingenuity and the context of why/how something was made the way it was. Apple's successfully bucking the tech trend and artists are joining the fight one process video at a time.

How I Protect My Time

In April's basement studio vlog, I dug into how I manage and protect my time. As an artist, it can be a battle to work for yourself and not descend into schedule chaos.
