Swing and a Miss
I'm going to be a bit tough on myself: my latest video doesn't meet my usual standards of magical surprise. It's only about 95% there.
A clunky, unnatural hand gesture signals exactly when the hidden cut happens (that's bad). The problem isn't with the editing, but with the choreography.
And that's the lesson: plan better!
I'm actually in the process of redoing this video (because I'm a perfectionist who refuses to be defeated), but what I should have initially done was explore the best, most interesting path to take.
For this video, that would've meant sitting in front of a mirror or camera for 30 minutes and discovering how the two cubes interacted with each other. Instead, I started filming and went with my first instinct (which is rarely correct).
So what does that mean for you? Before you hit record, give yourself some time to poke, prod, find the flaws, and improve your idea.
Is the information in the most interesting order? Can a sentence be eliminated? Is there a better place for the camera?
At least start by asking yourself if there's any part of the process that's being assumed. You're an expert and know something will work? That'll probably be the thing that haunts you.
New home for behind-the-scenes
I relaunched my Patreon as the exclusive place where I'll post daily process updates, editing breakdowns, and live streams (mix of free and paid).
Posting them everywhere felt too fragmented and algorithm-ification of it all on platforms like YouTube started to get exhausting.
Patreon's refreshing in that I can simply post what I want (with zero regard for title and thumbnail) for the people who actually want to see it. It's been fun to talk about video ideas before and during production!
